Report of Nicola Tosi on F.E.L. (Energetic phenomena Luminoso), a name he devised to highlight that despite the similarity of the phenomena, there are differences that make an initial observation may not be noticed but using technical instruments of precision, one can come close to the "heart" of the phenomenon , immortalizing the morphology and dynamics in detail to the point of putting the researcher to separate phenomenology known (type lights telluric Hessdalen Like, plasma phenomena ...) from a totally new one. All strategies and applying research methodologies found in astronomy and the study of radio waves. Douglas Trumbull est un réalisateur, producteur, scénariste né le 8 avril 1942 à Los Angeles. Il est surtout connu pour être l'un des pionniers des effets spéciaux visuels dans les années 1970. Les premiers travaux de Trumbull avec la NASA et le réalisateur Con Pederson attirent l'attention de Stanley Kubrick qui l'engage sur son film 2001, l'odyssée de l'espace. Il adapte le Slit-scan (technique mécanique permettant d'obtenir des animations psychédéliques) pour ce film.

En 1971, Trumbull réalise le film Silent Running sur lequel il utilisera un certain nombre de techniques visuelles et mécaniques développées pour le film 2001 mais non utilisés. Les critiques acclament Silent Running mais le public ne suit pas, certainement dû à une mauvaise publicité.
En 1978, il travaille sur les effets spéciaux du film Rencontres du troisième type et Star Trek : Le Film. En 1981, il est superviseur des effets visuels sur le film Blade Runner.
En 1983, il réalise un deuxième long métrage de SF, Brainstorm. Pour ce film, il invente le procédé Showscan; ce système a pour effet d’améliorer très sensiblement la netteté et la luminosité de l’image et d’accroître de façon spectaculaire le sentiment de réalité et de profondeur. Mais malheureusement, le film est entaché par la mort de Natalie Wood et aura très peu de succès au cinéma.
Aujourd'hui, il développe des systèmes visuels et mécaniques pour les parcs tels qu'Universal Studios avec des attractions comme Retour vers le futur ou Star Tours (à Disneyland).
Il a été nommé cinq fois aux Oscars et a reçu un Life-time achievement Oscar. Le génie et le talent de Douglas Trumbull sont aujourd'hui reconnus et les films qu'il a réalisé font partie des films cultes de la SF.

Campagne scientifique d’analyse des phénomènes lumineux observés dans la vallée d’Hessdalen en Norvège

Abstract: "Hessdalen lights (HL) are unexplained light balls usually seen in the valley of Hessdalen, Norway. In this work, it is suggested that HL are formed by a cluster of macroscopic Coulomb crystals in a plasma produced by the ionization of air and dust by alpha particles during radon decay in the dusty atmosphere. Several physical properties (oscillation, geometric structure, and light spectrum) observed in HL phenomenon can be explained through the dust plasma model."

If all the events turn out to be false positives, the existence of the unknown particle is not disproved. Instead, the most that can be claimed is that the
experiment sets an upper bound on the frequency with which the particle might occur under the prevailing experimental conditions. We approached our observations of Marfa lights in this spirit.

We designed and executed a 20 night field experiment in May and June 2008 at the Marfa Light View Park, a facility erected by the Texas Department of Transportation on US Highway 90 between Marfa and Alpine for the convenience of observers. During this time, no objects were sighted that met the criteria of Marfa lights

One of us (Bunnell) has maintained a set of unmanned observation stations using low-light video cameras trained on various portions of Mitchell Flats for several years.12 These units are typically aimed away from frequently traveled roads to avoid false positives, and so may not capture all events of interest. This system of unmanned cameras proved useful for high-altitude atmospheric research when it captured images of the first gigantic jet ever recorded over continental North America. A gigantic jet is a high-altitude atmospheric phenomenon associated with thunderstorms. Recovery and inspection of these digital recordings, which cover most nights during 2000–2008, have yielded numerous images whose motion and estimated intensity meet the criteria of genuine Marfa lights. These criteria include erratic off and on periods, gradual and sudden brightening, dimming, and eccentric motion not characteristic of automotive headlights, location in regions difficult to access by vehicle, splitting, merging, and other motion- and duration-related factors.

Who: University of Texas Society of Physics Students. When: May 2004 (4 nights). With what: Video cameras, traffic volume monitoring equipment, chase cars, binoculars, and student observers. Conclusions: All of the lights observed and tracked during their study were determined to be automobiles. Comment: Truly mysterious lights appear on less than 12 nights a year (average of 2004 to 2008 is estimated to have been about 11 nights per year) so the odds were against them seeing MLs during their four night study.

The alignment of ice crystals in changing electric fields

Abstract

Orientation of ice crystals in the form of thin plates (diameter up to 30 μm, thickness 0.5 to a few μm) was investigated optically for crystals nucleated in a supercooled cloud in a laboratory cold chamber. Random orientation caused by Brownian rotation of small crystals (apparent as twinkling) and alignment caused by airflow resulting from fall motion of larger crystals was changed by application of an electric field either as a step or as an oscillating square wave of variable frequency of order 1–10 Hz. Video records and time exposed still photographs demonstrated crystal fall, oscillation, and orientation changes with electric field magnitude and frequency. Thin film interference colours provided crystal thickness, mass, and moment of inertia. Realignment began for electric fields greater than 0.5–1 kV/m and was complete above 10 kV/m. Measurements of degree of alignment (from random orientation to completely parallel to the electric field) and its time dependence (of order tenths of seconds) are consistent with predictions of a theoretical oscillator model based on electrical torques on ellipsoids in viscous air. In a changing electric field at low frequency, the crystal realignment varies along with the variation field and at high frequency they remain aligned along the average field. These results are applied to larger crystals as occur in the atmosphere with implication for remote sensing of ice by radar and lidar as influenced by local electric fields and with the possibility of their remote measurement by optical observation of changing crystal orientations.
